I killed them! I killed them all!
The ants showed up late last week. I put out the Dual Choice prescription strength bait I got from the exterminator guy at work, and they did nothing. No ants went to them that I saw. So I put out the Terro Ant Killer Liquid Ant bait stations. That was just a few days ago! Soon the ants were swarming over the liquid ant bait, sucking it up, and hopefully taking some of it back to the nest to feed the other ants. I kept thinking of a line from the movie Heavy Metal: “You die, she dies, everybody dies…”
Drink up you little bastards!
Ant Killer
Well, last night, there was only a single ant left at the bait station. I checked this morning, and just one ant there. I think the rest are dead, or off dying!
I am the mighty ant killer! *beating chest*

My wife called today to tell me the air conditioners are not working as well as they should be. Actually, over the last couple years they have been putting out less and less cold air. I have been meaning to call for service, but have kept procrastinating. We had them checked and serviced the first summer we were in the house. I had called a heating and cooling place, but they gave me a appointment date out a couple months or more. I called another place, and got one much sooner. But the place that I called that actually did the work, was through a hardware store chain that closed all it’s stores. They are not in business anymore.
Today I called the heating and cooling place that I didn’t go with before. They gave me an appointment for May 18th. It’s good that we are going to get the service. We haven’t had the thing looked at since the first time we had it checked which was like 6 years ago.

The other day, the ants showed up in droves! One day there weren’t any. The next I saw dozens. Ahh! Life in in the woods! :)
I put out a couple ant bait stations that I got from a professional exterminatore at work. I left these stations out for a couple days, but saw no activity around then at all.
Then I decided to put out a couple of the Terro Liquid Ant Bait stations. I had them in my garage and I knew they worked. I put one in one corner of the kitchen and one in the other corner. Less than a day later, they were storming over the one station, but hadn’t found the other. I ended up moving the 2nd station next to the first.
Now I just let the ants come and eat up, and let them take the bait back to the nest. I think the logic is that they feed it to the other ants, and the whole nest dies.
In the past when I have used these, the ants are all over the stations for a couple days, then slowly the number of ants declines. They start moving slower and slower, until there are no more ants.
Here is a picture of the ants feeding at the two liquid ant bait stations.
Liquid Ant Bait
This ant bait from Terro is the only ant bait that I have tried that actually seems to work.

Well, Spring is here! The sun is out, and the house heated up to the high 70’s. I was very warm. I turned on the air conditioners for the first time this year. I also changed the direction of the ceiling fans. I had them blowing up for the winter to move the warm air up around the cathedral ceilings. Now I have them blowing down to help make the house feel cooler.
The ceiling fans were a great investment. There was a ceiling fan over the living room when we bought the house. But it was a cheap fan, and one of the metal arms was broken. I replaced it with a big heavy duty Hunter Original. The sucker is heavy and has a cast iron body. But it seriously moves air. I installed a low profile Hunter ceiling fan in our bedroom area. There hadn’t been a fan there, but it really helps cool the area down. And the Hunter fans are very quiet!
The air conditioner was here when we moved in. It is a Sanyo Tri-Zone air conditioner. It seems to be very efficient. Our power bills are very reasonable during the summer. Nonetheless, we keep the temperature set at about 75, onll occasionally turning them cooler.

Yesterday there was nothing. Today, I have killed dozens of ants in our kitchen! It happens every spring. But usually they show up a little more slowly. One here, one there. But it is a frigging ant explosion today.
I set out the two Dual Choice ant bait stations that the exterminator at work gave me last week. I will wait and see how they work. If they don’t do anything, I will get out the Terro liquid ant bait stations. I know they work. I might have some out in the garage. If not, I can get some at Home Depot.
Meanwhile, I am torn between killing the little black ants with a paper towel, or to let them run free in hopes that they will find and take some of the bait back to the nest.
At least they aren’t the big Carpenter ants. Seeing those guys in my house always makes me nervous. These ants are just annoying.
