With heating costs going up, I am making an attempt to winterize my house better. I bought some of those insulation pads that go behing outlet and switch plates, and have been installing those on all of the outside walls.
I just ordered a new door to replace the door that goes between our garage and house. The door that is there now is an old wood door that doesn’t seal well in the frame. It also has a crack in one of the wooden panels. I added foam strips last year, and that helped. I also added a sweeper thing at the bottom the door, but that is already getting torn apart from use. We still get cold air in that area. So I bought a steel 6 panel door at Lowes for $119 + tax, and am having my buddy help me get it home tomorrow. I have never installed a door before, but I have a few books that show how to do it. I have also checked out some websites. It doens’t look too difficult. I will take my time. Even if it takes me 5 hours, it will be worth the savings of $299 that Lowes would charge me.
I sprayed some expanding foam around a poorly installed vent for my Jenair grill (I didn’t install it). Maybe next summer I will pull the vent out, and reinstall it myself and do a better job.
There is a poorly installed bathroom vent in our half bath, and I am going to look at installing a new vent there. The vent that is there is nothing more than a fan, and something along the lines of a dryer vent outlet. It lets lots of cold air in. There has got to be something better.
I just ordered a couple books in weatherizing a house. So maybe they will have some good information.
